Recipe Ingredients

You’ll need the following ingredients to make this Starbucks Bacon Gruyère Egg Bites Recipe:

Ingredient Notes

Bacon: I prefer using either center cut bacon (because it is lower in fat) or a nitrate-free bacon (which is free from the preservatives that are commonly found in cured bacon).

Cream Cheese: I use Philadelphia 1/3-less-fat cream cheese. This helps to keep the calorie content down a bit, but if you prefer, you can certainly use full-fat cream cheese for a richer taste.

Equipment Need

You don’t need to be a master chef or have a fancy sous vide machine to whip up these delicious Starbucks-style egg bites at home. With a few basic kitchen tools, you can recreate this gourmet breakfast right in your own kitchen:

Blender: A good blender is essential for this recipe. It will ensure your egg mixture is smooth and well-combined, which is key for getting the right texture in your egg bites. Plus, blending the eggs with the cheeses makes for an incredibly creamy consistency.

Instant Pot: While Starbucks uses a sous vide technique to cook their egg bites, you can achieve a similar result with an Instant Pot. This versatile kitchen tool uses pressure cooking to get that perfectly cooked, velvety texture we all love in the egg bites.

Silicone Egg Bites Mold: To achieve the signature Starbucks egg bite shape, you’ll need a silicone egg bites mold. These fit right into your pressure cooker and make it easy to create the perfect portions. They also have the added bonus of making clean-up a breeze!

Steam Rack or Trivet: This is essential for cooking the egg bites in an Instant Pot, as it keeps the mold off the bottom of the pot and allows the steam to circulate for even cooking. Your Instant Pot should have come with one but if you can you grab one on Amazon.

Step 4: Pour one cup of water into the Instant Pot. Place the trivet into the Instant Pot and then place the mold (with the silicone lid on) on top of the trivet.

Step 5: Close the instant pot by placing the lid on the pot and twist the lid to secure. Close the valve. Using the steam setting, set the timer to 8 minutes.

Step 6: When the Instant Pot has finished, open the valve to release the pressure. Using the trivet, pull the mold out of the Instant Pot. Keeping the egg bites in the mold, place the silicone mold on a wired cooling rack.

Recipe Tips and Tricks

Cook the bacon until it’s crispy but not burnt. You want it to retain a bit of crunch even after being cooked with the eggs.

Be sure to let the egg bites cool for a few minutes before removing them from the mold. They’re easier to handle and hold their shape better when slightly cooled.

Be sure to use the lid that your silicone egg bites mold came with. It’s designed to create a seal, keeping the steam in and preventing any condensation from dripping into the egg mixture.

Storage, Freezing, & Reheating

Storage: Once the egg bites have cooled completely, they can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They should be consumed within 3-4 days for optimal freshness.

To Freeze: To freeze the egg bites, place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze until solid. Once they’re frozen, transfer them to a zip-top freezer bag or airtight container. Be sure to label the bag or container with the date. They can be frozen for up to 3 months.

Reheating: If refrigerated, the leftover egg bites can be reheated in the microwave for about 30 seconds, or until heated through. If frozen, it’s best to thaw them overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

Additions, Substitutions, and Variations

SUBSTITUTIONS
Cheese: If Gruyere isn’t your thing or you can’t find it, you can substitute with other types of cheese. Cheddar Cheese, mozzarella, or Monterey Jack Cheese would all work well.

Bacon: You can swap out the bacon with other flavorful meats like diced ham, cooked and crumbled sausage, turkey bacon for a healthier option, or even prosciutto for a gourmet touch.

Spice Level: If you prefer a milder or hotter soup, adjust the amount of chili powder to your taste. You can also add a chopped jalapeño for an extra kick.

ADDITIONS
Vegetables: Add some nutrition and color by including vegetables like bell peppers, spinach, or tomatoes. Make sure to sauté them first to remove excess moisture.

Spices: To change up the flavor profile, try adding different spices such as paprika, garlic powder, or even a dash of hot sauce for a kick.

VARIATIONS
Mediterranean Style: Swap the bacon for sun-dried tomatoes, use feta instead of Gruyere, and add some chopped spinach and Kalamata olives.

Southwest Style: Add in some cooked chorizo, bell peppers, onions, and swap the Gruyere for Pepper Jack cheese.

Veggie-Loaded: Leave out the bacon and add in a variety of sautéed vegetables like bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and spinach.

Egg Whites & Roasted Red Pepper: Swap the whole eggs for 10 egg whites and add 1/2 cup of finely diced red bell pepper. This variation not only cuts calories but also delivers a high-protein breakfast.

Definitely. You can bake the egg bites in a muffin tin (or silicone muffin pan) in the oven. The cooking time and temperature might need to be adjusted, so keep an eye on them to avoid overcooking.

This can happen if extra moisture is added to the egg bites. Make sure any add-ins like vegetables are properly sautéed and drained, and be careful to seal the silicone lid well or cover tightly with aluminum foil to prevent water from getting in during the pressure cooking process.
